A Sweet Little Girl Named Alice..............
This page was last updated: November 17, 2007
<-----------This is Alice. She is a Moluccan
Cockatoo. Yes, she has a "dress" on.. See, she
was a very unhappy girl in her last home and as a
result, she plucked and plucked and then she
mutilated herself. Sadly, this quite common.
When we heard about her and her boyfriend Gus,
we knew we had to help. We took Alice first, she
had several operations to help her wounds. Then
the owner emailed us and asked us to take Gus..
we got there as quick as we could. Sadly, Gus
also mutilated but also had another problem, he
has a tumor in his throat and developed other
problems. He passed shortly after we took him in.
Alice was very lonely without her friend but soon
found that because it was safe here, she became
friends with Luke, another Moluccan Cockatoo we
rescued. They are wonderful friends now, and sit
for a long time and preen and preen each other.
Some day we hope Alice will totally stop her sad
behavior, but we are working on her happiness and
hope it will help. PLEASE- if you have a bird that
needs help, ask for help. Alice's owner did not for
a LONG time. Here is a picture of her when we
  first saw her...... <below>
I can honestly say Alice looks HAPPY here... Her prison picture is one of the saddest pictures we have ever taken.... she looks like a lost sole...
How sad does this little lady look? I think of it as
her prison photo. When she arrived, she would
scream STOP IT STOP IT, HELP HELP, NO
DON'T DO THAT, HELP HELP. How helpless we
felt that these are the words she must have heard
so often. We are SO thrilled that she loves being
here and is happy. She laughs, plays with other
birds, she has even become friends with another
Moluccan named Cotton, who is blind. She was
left at a pet store by her owner....... Just left, the
owner left without even telling the people in the
store her name.... she will be on here soon...

Below is a graphic picture of Alice's chest when she first got here. She has had several surgeries since then and is doing quite well...
This is what Alice had on when we picked her up and brought her to our vet... (to the left) She had on hospital surgical masks, a wash cloth and tape. She wore home (to the right) a steril bandage that was changed often, her wound cleaned and medication was applied...... She looks happier even after only 15 minutes !!
IF YOU HAVE A BIRD THAT HAS STARTED TO PLUCK-- PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU GET INFORMATION AND HELP. Simple plucking CAN lead to mutilation !!
Just look at her feather growth from this little picture- to the picture on the left ! That was only a few short weeks !!
